It would be interesting to hear about how the teachers/advisors experience this school. Do they, too, feel they are free? Do they choose what & how to teach? <br />Perhaps testing in some subjects is helpful to determine sufficient mastery to be able to proceed with the next level of a subject (I'm thinking of math in particular). But so often learning is not methodically accomplished in steps, but is more in leaps, that require spiraling back to pick up what you missed, or are now motivated to study more deeply.<br />Regarding younger children, I don't think they naturally think about how much they have learned. When the readiness is there, they simply will begin reading, with never a thought to "mastery".
